Peru sack Fossati after failure to ignite World Cup push
Peru sacked Jorge Fossati on Thursday after the veteran coach failed to resuscitate the country's hapless bid to reach the 2026 World Cup finals.
Former Uruguay and Qatar coach Fossati, 74, was hired in December 2023 after Peru had managed just two points from six qualifiers under the guidance of Juan Reynoso.
They were 10th and last in the South American qualifying table then and that is where they remain now with seven points from 12 games.
"Jorge Fossati will not continue his mission as coach of the Peruvian national team," the Peru football federation said.
The team is a long way off the sixth and final qualifying spot currently occupied by Paraguay on 17 points with six rounds left.
The South American qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada resumes in March.
